Competition Team Information

Dear Students and Parents,

Thank you for your interest in our Competition Team! We are entering our 3rd year with our Prodigy Dance Team, and are very excited to get started! Our studio team may compete in a variety of areas of dance including jazz, tap, hip hop, contemporary and lyrical. By offering this variety to our students, we have opened the doors for our students to expand their training in the performing arts, and become well-rounded performers. Our team director and choreographers are all looking forward to working with so many new and talented young dancers!

Company Eligibility:

All students enrolled at Prodigy Dance Company are eligible for our competition team. All team members are expected to commit to the full season of performances and competitions. Any conflicts must be presented to our director and the office in advance.

We strongly encourage every dancer that is interested in our Competition Team to take at least one of our summer camps offered throughout the month of August. We will hold a skills night during the summer time that allows our staff to be able to see each dancer's ability and correctly place each dancer in the routine(s) he or she will be working on and performing throughout the year.

Each dancer will be considered for placement in any genre. All students will be a part of one dance team, but divided into different groups for routines. While students may not all be participating in all genres, we want to encourage teamwork and support of our entire team, regardless of which numbers a person will be participating in.

After August Summer Classes:

After all of the August summer classes are held the staff will determine the number of groups, selected styles, and placement that best suits each of the dancers. All team members interested in joining our competition team will receive an email with placement/group information and details. We thank you in advance for your patience as our director and instructors take time to create groups for the new season.

A mandatory competition team meeting will be held once choreography begins (time and date is TBD). This meeting will cover what we expect throughout the season as a team member, what competitions we will be going to as well as covering any questions you may have.

From September through June, our team will rehearse as follows:

Group numbers will be rehearsed weekly on Thursday nights at a set time for each of the numbers. Additional rehearsals maybe scheduled as competition gets closer (Dress Rehearsals, Final Run-Through, etc.).

Solos, Duos, or Trios:

Solo, duo and trio lessons will be up to the discretion of the dancer's family whether an hour or half an hour private is wanted. Scheduling for solos, duo, and trios will be conducted through the office. An email will be sent out to all interested families looking to compete with a solo, duo, or trio will receive an email with all of the teacher's availabilities. We will ask you to select the best 3 time slots that work best for your schedule. The office will then try to accommodate everyones preferred time slot/instructor.

Required Classes:

In order to join our team, you must be enrolled in certain classes at Prodigy Dance Company each month from August thru June (Recital month). These technical classes that are required for each member of the competition team allows our program to help students build their technical skills to a level that will be competitive. Our dance team members are required to take classes that will work on their strength, flexibility, and technical skill. Listed below are the classes that are mandatory to each age group.

Ages 6 and under:

  • Weekly competition rehearsal(s)

  • Combo Class (ballet and tap) or ballet class

Additionally Recommended (6 and under):

  • Acrobatics

  • Leaps and turns

Ages 7+ years:

  • Weekly competition rehearsal(s)

  • Tap Technique class (if competing in tap, and not taking a recreational tap class already)

  • Ballet class

  • Leaps and turns class

Additionally Recommended (7+ years):

  • Acrobatics

  • Strength and Conditioning

Required Class Attendance:

We can not expect the standard of our team to improve if team members are not consistent in their technical training. Regular class attendance is an important part of making sure our performers are receiving the proper training required to compete. In an effort to improve the skills of our competition team and each individual, team members will not be allowed to miss more than one unexcused day in a month of any required class to be on the competition team. We understand situations may arise that are out of your control, but we do expect for the office to be contacted so we are aware of the student's absence in advance.

Recital Participation:

All team members will participate in the June Recital with their group numbers. Team members are expected to dance their class routines as well. The only exceptions to this rule are technique only classes. Participation in recital routines is required because students can not maximize growth in their training if they are not dancing the entire year in the required classes. We expect our team members to be good examples of how hard work and dedication can pay off. Team members are representatives of our studio, not just in our studio and at competitions, but also in our community.
